Description
Previously a hiking only trail, the Leroy Smith Nature Trail has been converted to a multi-use trail as of December 2015 and is now open to mountain bikes. This loop trail is a short, steep technical trail with plenty of roots, rocks, tight twisty turns, and natural drops. It provides a more challenging ride at the park complementing the JFA Trail.
The trail is directional, and unlike the JFA Trail, it does not change direction and hikers AND mountain bikers must follow the same route. The trail entrance is on the left while the trail exit is on the right.
The ride begins uphill with a wide, wet section (the water seeps from the hillside and it will never be dry). There is a beautiful scenic stop with a waterfall off to the right. It quickly narrows into singletrack with rocks protruding from the trail that must be maneuvered around as you ride up the narrow lines between the rocks. You then pass over a wooden bridge and ride along the mostly level trail covered with many, many roots.
Next up is a short hike-a-bike section. Pick up your bike and carry it up several steep steps formed by tree roots. You then continue onto another section or two covered with roots, followed by a short section riding along a ridge with a few fast, technical descents. The next section shoots you through a pine forest around a few tight twisty sections with a few hard turns. You then drop quickly down the trail, over a large log drop, and across the JFA Trail. The final section is a fast downhill with plenty of drops, large and small, including several line options for more advanced riders. You finish the loop by exiting across another wooden bridge.
