Overview

One of the most popular cross-country rides in the Mount Shasta area that is entirely singletrack. This varied loop route combines smooth berms with slightly technical rock gardens, creating an ideal afternoon ride.

Need to Know

Cross the gravel road diagonally at the angle the trail brings you into it at. This loop will not require any shuttling.

Description

Head out on the Gateway Trail from the parking lot and enjoy the views as you wind through the beginning of the route. It crosses a few old roads, so just continue on the singletrack you started on. As you progress further on the trail, you'll encounter a couple slightly steep, rocky sections that contain some technical turns.

Later along the trail, you'll find a sign on a tree signifying the Zap Trail turnoff on your right, ignore it as you'll ride that segment of the Zap Trail on your way back. As you curl around through the dense forest, the trail will cross another old road. Continue across the road and take the Gateway Trail (the one on the right) as the sign identifies.

Then, you'll ride straight into the Tunnel Trail, as you'll see on a sign, turn left onto it and follow it as it leads up and right, don't turn left onto My Trail after your initial turn to the right. Shortly after, you'll see a trail going left with a sign signaling "Gateway Trail." Follow that trail up until you take a slight turn right on a slightly less clear trail climbing directly up the hill. That trail will tie you in with the main Gateway Trail you were on earlier as you head back on it the way you came.

Enjoy!

No crazy steep uphill except for a few hundred feet on the connector trail. Trail was dry, sandy, and rocky in parts. Pig farm is a fun ride 12mi — 2h 00m
