Overview
Very fun trail with lots of singletrack, easy climbs, good switchbacks, one short advanced technical section, and fast roller coaster descents. This trail can be ridden in either direction, but clockwise is the most fun.
Need to Know
The main parking area at Sand Cove trailhead is located up a rough road that should only be attempted with high clearance vehicles. Most people park just off the paved road and ride the singletrack up to this trailhead. There is a good map at the Sand Cove trailhead showing all of the trails in the network.
Barrel Roll is the most popular.
Description
Begin by parking off
Gates Lane in Santa Clara, Utah. Look for the singletrack trail heading south up the hill. Hop on this trail and start climbing. You'll eventually pass a water tank, after which the trail levels out and continues until it T's at a dirt road. Take a right and head up the road, where you'll quickly see the parking area for the Cove Wash trailhead on your left.
From the Sand Cove trailhead head west onto the
Barrel Roll singletrack. At about 3 miles (in the clockwise direction) the trail drops into a short technical section that demands advanced riding skills. It's good quality, but don't feel bad about walking if it's too hard.
Clockwise is the recommended way to ride this loop, but it's worth trying in both directions.
Precipice and
Sidewinder are two short extensions that you can add to this loop for a little more challenge. There are several other intersections that you'll come to, and they are well marked. It's easy enough to find your way around, so stick to the loop mapped here or come up with your own variation. You never have to ride it the same way twice!
