Description
While the big drop on
LPS is intimidating, it is nothing compared to the Notch.
The Notch trail continues straight where
LPS dives down into a ledgy right-hand switchback. This section of trail above the Notch is significantly harder and more technical than the main
LPS option, partly because of the odd rock in this area, and partly because it is ridden less and consequently has fewer eager riders chipping away the obstacles to "improve" the trail.
Soon, the trail drops through a white sandstone rock band via what is likely the hardest single feature to be found anywhere on
Porcupine Rim: the Notch. This steep, sandy, narrow drop is complicated by a big ledge at the bottom, and an immediate tight right turn. There used to be a dead tree here, to protect you going over the edge and give you something to bounce off, but it tipped over last year.
After this drop, the trail then eases and contours left around the top of a drainage to reconnect with
LPS in roughly half a mile.
