Troy Built trail is a culmination of everything that makes the Kokopelli Loops trails so sweet, featuring a bit of everything to be found throughout the trail network. The trail has swooping flow; technical steps, ledges and squeezes; heart-pounding, anaerobic climbs; and rim exposure. The trail, located at the end of
Hawkeye Road is the far western segment of the Kokopelli Loops, and is the exit point of the
Kokopelli Trail from the system.
From the Mack exit drive south onto the dirt road towards a parking area. Turn right and drive
Hawkeye Road to the west. Park at the small, usually empty parking lot on the left.
Ride a steep little climb up
Hawkeye Road to the end of
Lion's Loop on the left, and the beginning of Troy Built. Continue west along the doubletrack a few hundred yards to a dirt turnaround, and the beginning of the singletrack.
Descend initially to a wash then begin a tough, 3/4 mile climb; including a tight slick-rock switchback and a number of short, punchy climbs to a high point overlooking Salt Creek to the west. The trail then begins a loose descent bottoming out in another slick rock drainage.
After 1 1/2 trail miles, pass a junction to the right: the exit point of the
Kokopelli Trail from the Kokopelli Loops area. From here to
Lion's Loop,
Kokopelli Trail follows Troy Built.
There is a steep, loose climb immediately after this intersection after which Troy Built traverses a rim with a bit of exposure and becomes much more flowy, punctuated by technical interludes.
After 3 1/2 total trail miles, begin a steep, stinger 1/2 mile climb to
Lion's Loop. Fortunately, the top half of this has been realigned, and; although still an effort is much more climeable. Top out at a four-way junction with
Lion's Loop and
Mack Ridge.
There are several loop options for Troy Built. The most common is a perimeter loop utilizing
Hawkeye Road to connect Troy Built with
Mary's Loop, and
Lion's Loop. This is great in either direction. If ridden clockwise park at the small parking area between Mack and the northern end of
Lion's Loop and ride east on the road first to
Mary's Loop. If riding counterclockwise park at the main Kokopelli trailhead at Loma and ride west on the road first to Troy Built.
For an all singletrack lollipop loop park at the small parking area between Mack and the northern end of
Lion's Loop. Ride Troy Built to
Lion's Loop and loop back on
Mack Ridge via
Mary's Loop (or visa-versa) then return on Troy Built.
