Backpacker features over a mile of moderate downhill riding, which is a tone of fun, even if the trail for the most part isn't the most interesting that Callahan has to offer.
Backpacker leaves
Red Tail to the right after during it's decent down the back of Gibbs Mountain. The initial riding is a steep decent over rocks and logs, and a bit hard for the trial's intermediate difficulty. This section is short however, and soon you are spit out onto a wide dirt road.
Turn left onto this dirt road and follow it briefly before taking your first right. If you continue straight, you'll meet up with
Pine Tree Loop.
Follow this wide trail/dirt road past some gentle climbing, before taking a sharp left onto a narrower, descending trail. This trail travels past a short section with many connectors and alternate trails. Continue to follow Backpacker straight, until you end at a T, turn right to keep following Backpacker.
After this turn, ride down half a mile of steep descending. After two wide turns, the downhill is over and the trail starts climbing. Backpacker meets up with
Acorn on the left twice during this climbing, and after the second intersection, it starts descending again, finally ending at the Broadmeadow Street parking lot.
As a climb:
If you descend
Bear Paw, Backpacker is a good climb to return back to Beebe Pond and
Pine Tree Loop.
After finishing
Pine Tree Loop, the very end of backpacker is a good, if steep, way to get back to
Red Tail.
