Overview
A favorite of those in the know, Murphy Hanrehan offers widely varied terrain, fantastic technical features and an all around good time. Some of the favorites are the tall and narrow bridge, the uphill rock garden and step bridge. While the whole trail is a fantastic ride, there are some great fast spots, and great skill builders.
This trail may be tough for riders who are not as strong, since it has a fair amount of mild but long climbs but don't let that keep you away!
Description
This trail is a favorite of locals, but worth a trip down to Savage from anywhere in the Metro. From the parking area, cross the road and head south. The trail winds its way through some prairie and then goes into the woods. Gentle climbs bring the rider to the top of the ridge, which is followed, more or less until the trail converges on the first "head out or head back" point.
Turn left and head over the harder loop qualifier, which should be easily ridden by anyone making it to that point. Don't let it be a deterrent to continuing, because the trail just gets better. The surface of the trail becomes rougher, more roots and rocks the bridges are narrower. The loop will bring you past some of the more interesting technical features, such as an extreme uphill rock garden or a stone bridge.
The awesome "Bird Loop" is back open! Enjoy this roughly half mile sprint through some flowy woods entered by hopping through a now-opened gate and returning just a few yards down the trail
In all the climbing and descending, the trail dips in and out of the woods and the prairie, leading the rider back to the beginning of the outer loop. Follow the left fork to return to the start of the trail.
Climb up and over the ridge and get dumped out into the prairie one last time, put it in high gear and practice your hops, pumps, cornering and direction changes right back to the parking lot.
