Overview
This is a great trail that opened up in the spring of 2013. There is a great 2.4-mile climb up to the top and you turn around and ride a blistering downhill back to the trailhead! And there is a great view at the top of the trail as well.
Description
You can start from multiple locations but this ride uses the parking off Washington Ave. Head south along Grand Ave until you hit the
Al Foster Trail and will see the sign for Bluff View trail on the left. After you cross the small railroad track, you drop into the trail and take a sharp right and follow the bluff. You'll round the bluff to the left and get into some steeper climbing. There is a tight switchback into a nice bermed turn. After a few more easy turns, there is a drainage crossing that can be messy for days after rain so be careful, the rocks will get slick.
From there, you get into a dense cedar forest and the trail tightens up a bit so keep your head up and an eye out for the blind turns. You'll round out the cedar grove with a creek crossing down a steep short drop and back up to climbing. From here, the forest transitions into an oak hickory forest and the foliage can get quite dense in the summer so keep an eye out and speed down in the turns.
You'll round out the climb to the top with a beautiful view of the Meramec River valley below. It really is one of the best views in the county, so take your time to enjoy it and have a snack before returning back down the hill.
History & Background
The trail overlooks the Crescent Valley where Native Americans once flourished. Some of the best flint in the nation was mined in this area (West Tyson's
Flint Quarry Trail) and has been found throughout the US at other Native American sites. The flint was used to fashion arrowhead points.
