Overview
Sunset Rocks provides fun, technical desert terrain. Located in the Gunnison Gorge National Rec Area, this trail has a few loose rocky sections, slickrock, and flowy descents.
The trail is shared with motorbikes and joggers, but it is rare to see anyone else out there. It is rideable most of the year, but can be very hot in the summer. Avoid these trails in in the rain at all costs... the trails will recover, but your bike may never get over the legendary Adobe Mud.
Need to Know
There are a number of ways to do this ride. You can access Sunset Rocks from the Eagle Valley TH or the Sunset Rocks TH. The Eagle Valley trail is very steep and technical, so intermediates may not want to start there, but experts might enjoy the challenge.
As mapped, this ride starts at the Sunset Rock TH, and does an out and back. It means finishing with a climb, but makes for an option to add on the
Eagle Valley Trail as well. And you can always ride the road back to finish the loop if you don't want to tackle the trail.
Stop by a local shop to get a copy of Tommy's Super Secret Map of the Adobes.
Description
The trail starts from the Sunset Rocks TH and climbs over a couple of hills to a junction. Turn right and follow the trail in and out of ravines. There are a number of short steep descents as you wind through shrubs and pinion trees. It's a few miles of very fun terrain.
You'll eventually reach the
Eagle Valley Trail. Intermediate riders will turn around here and retrace your steps. Experts can add this trail to the ride. The
Eagle Valley Trail is a nice option for some added challenge. It's quite steep and loose in spots, but has some very fun and technical moves. It goes for almost a mile and then splits (left for Sidewinder or right for Sunset Rocks).
On the way back, follow the Sunset Rocks trail until you reach a sign marking the split in the trail. Right takes you on a fun singletrack drop out to the road. Take this right and drop down to the road. Once you meet the road, turn left and head back up to the Sunset Rocks TH where you started from.
