Overview
The Kagenbi to Thansang Route is a journey out of the high mountains into the world's deepest gorge. Along the way you'll experience multiple crossings of the Kali Gandaki River, narrow exposed singletrack and amazing views of Dhaulagiri, one of the world's highest mountains.
Need to Know
Nepal is the kind of mountain bike destination that is best experienced with a tour company and guide. With routes and trails that interconnect through remote countryside and numerous villages, local knowledge and pre-planned logistics are invaluable.
The route described here is part of
Big Mountain Adventures Himalaya Heights trip.
Description
Starting in the village of Kagbeni, ramble along the east side of the riverbed to Jomson. Ride over the river and through the heart of town. Now on the west side of the Kali Gandaki River, follow a rough dirt road to a wooden suspension bridge. This is the first of a handful of crossings throughout the ride.
From the other side, follow the road along the toe of the slope to the opening of a wide valley. Ride across and then prepare to push up a steep slope to narrow exposed singletrack. Originally a foot path, this section of the route is both exciting and harrowing. Keep your eyes on the trail and be ready for random staircases and quick rock fall sections. For most, it's best to walk these.
After a traverse, the route descends with a spectacular view into the village of Marpha, a place well-known for its apple brandy.
From here the route follows a technical trail through pines and across multiple drainages before entering the village of Tukuche, a great place to stop for a meal.
Continue along the main dirt road from here. This section is likely to be dusty and busy with motorcycles and buses. Turn right to climb up to the village of Thasang and its namesake lodge. You're likely to be overwhelmed by the idyllic setting above valley floor and below Dhaulagiri, a mountain that measures 26,795 feet high.
