Description

North Franklin peak is the highest point in the Franklin Mountains at 7,192 ft, rising some 3,000 ft above the Heinrich Park trailhead.

Like Mundy's Gap West and Mundy's Gap East, this is an old bulldozed road that has been converted to a trail. Compared to the lower roads, it is considerably steeper and paved with loose slabby rocks--not gravel. The result is a very difficult climb and descent on a mountain bike.

The grade plus the looseness means that many riders will walk most of the route up. The ride down crosses sections that are so loose it may be easier to walk them.

There are also a couple of short sections where deep ruts have turned the road into singletrack.

This trail will give very experienced riders quite a workout and most will do a lot of walking--both up and down. The views from the peak are spectacular.
