Overview
There's a little bit of everything here--a good climb, technical singletrack, aspen groves, wildlife, and views for miles--but you'll never forget the switchbacks.
Need to Know
Don't be deterred by the grunt up the jeep road ... it's worth it.
You can ride it either way, but clockwise is most popular.
Description
From the City Creek trailhead work your way southwest to the Cusick Creek jeep road via
Prison Trail,
Death Valley,
Burrito,
Lichen, or
Serengeti. Take the jeep road across Cusick Creek and up a strenuous climb until it eventually levels out and offers some relief with a short coast into the trees.
Over The Top departs the jeep road and crosses Cusick Creek at the bottom of the coast. From there its a series of switchbacks through aspens and open hillsides to the ridge on top. It's all down from here.
The downhill begins with a cruise along an open hillside. Once you round the corner on the ridge, get ready to pucker as you take on technical switchbacks and rock slides. After a series of tight switchbacks the trail heads east (toward town) through cedars and aspens. There is a split in the trail immediately following a short but steep switchback. The left fork connects to Sullivan's. Take the switchback to the right to continue on
Over The Top.
Over The Top eventually exits the cedars and returns to the sage brush bench, where it splits. Take the left fork with the bermed corner which will connect to Sullivan's, ride up Sully's for a few hundred yards until
Ritalin cuts off and down to the right, and take
Ritalin,
911, and
Lifeflight back to the parking lot for one of the best downhills around. (Note:
Ritalin connects to Cross-Cut. About 50 yards into Cross-Cut there is an unmarked but well-used trail to the left that takes you to
911.)
History & Background
Hand-built by a handful of locals with vision. They deserve all the credit.
