Description
Search and Seizure deserves its black diamond rating. It is a technically challenging trail that demands advanced bike handling skills and preferably a downhill or all-mountain style bike.
The trailhead is located directly behind the Sunspot lodge which is located at the top of both the Zephyr and Eskimo Express lifts. The initial drop-in required the rider to roll down a short but steep, technical rock garden. This feature alone should clue you in to whether or not this trail is for you!
Once you've cleared the initial rock feature, get ready for some high speed tech riding. There are many large rocks and a few roots to contend with here. Many of the rocks create up to two foot drop-offs behind them. With speed, and the right line, you can send these drops and keep your momentum. Interspersed between the tech are some chunky berms. After bouncing, dropping and weaving your way through about four tight switchbacks, you'll see a bail-out point for
Shy Ann. If the first part of this trail rattled and/or scared you, I'd suggest bailing here!
If you're up for an even more technical challenge, stay right on Search and Seizure. Most of the rest of the trail is very similar to the way it began - requiring the rider to pick a good line and have calculated timing on pedal strokes. The burliest section of the trail comes after another couple of switchbacks. Here you'll encounter a much steeper pitch that is roughly 150 feet long. This pitch is littered with pointy boulders, a few trees and loose soil in between. It is a very technical descent! At the bottom of this pitch, if you're still on your bike, bear right to merge with
Trestle Downhill or left to
The Boulevard, which is a much more tame trail.
