Description

The start of this trail is off to the right of switchback #11 on the Prairie View Trail. The dirt trail has managed to dodge the erosion fairy, unlike the PV descent. It alternates moderate flow sections with short and steep tech bits that will leave you with a big grin at the bottom rock pile. If you want to do it again, it's often faster to just push back up to the top instead of riding all the way 'round.

Once you're past the big rockpile and are on a straight stretch of trail, you'll come to a T intersection. To get back to Barrier, take a right turn. Follow this trail, staying right at intersections until you come to a 4-way junction, at which point you want to head up and to the right on wide, gravelly section. Stay on this and climb up and out of a rocky gully onto a wide, straight trail. The trail forks ahead - stay right to take Stoney Trail back toward Barrier.

The ride out can be fun or miserable, depending on how many horses have been through. Camp Chief Hector is a summer camp for kids, and they have horseback riding as one of their activities, so the exit trail can be pretty trashed sometimes. That said, the last few years have seen the trail be in very good shape.
