Mountain biking is restricted March 1 - March 31 per DCR, "Mountain biking prohibited on unpaved trails from March 1 to March 31 or as posted." ( mass.gov/location-details/m…)

Overview

This is a generally easy trail with a few challenging sections. You can really haul or just mozy depending on your interests. Lots of great views out over the reservoirs and plenty of nature to point out. This ride includes several fun downhill sections and most climbs are gentle.

Need to Know

Bring extra tubes and a pump if you plan on going fast. Getting a flat is not uncommon if you bomb through some of the rock fields.

Description

This is a great trail for children, or like me, towing children. Easy enough to pull a trailer through, but difficult enough to provide a good cardio workout. There are several technically challenging sections of trail, especially when dealing with the extra weight and/or low speeds required for riding with kids.

Park at the often busy Bellevue Pond. You start off at the north end of Governors Ave. Start on Middle Road which hangs left at Panther Cave. Continue on Middle Road till you hit the lake. From there veer right onto S. Dam Rd which follows the S. Res.

Make sure you stay on S. Dam and take a left when you intersect with Brooks Rd. At the bottom of the hill stay right. Crest the hill, take the detour, then go around the gate at the bottom of the hill and take a left. You can now tell me what road you are on.

Hit pavement at Hillcrest, take a left, go past one trailhead, then hit Nanapashamet Road on your left. From here, find the red square signs and green blazes to stay on the intersecting Bike Loop. Stay on this trail until you find Molly's Spring Road and then take a left. Follow the trail, go under the chain, hang another left and find yourself on a land bridge. Stay on Molly's until you find S. Dam. Turn right and follow your breadcrumbs or go left for repeated fun.

Be sure to watch out for several sections of jagged rocks or you'll end up with a flat. Most sections have an easily spotted best line through, so caution when passing takes you off of that line.

Build in time for extra loops or time off the bike as there are several sections that can serve as rest areas with great views over the reservoirs.
