Description
This road has been closed to motor vehicles, so while it is a doubletrack, it has the feel of a singletrack. It connects from a trailhead parking lot on Highway 9 to McCullough Gulch Road just south of the
Wheeler Trail intersection.
It provides a more reasonable access, and warm-up to
Wheeler Trail, because who wouldn't want to make the
Wheeler Trail a bit more difficult?
The McCullough Gulch trailhead is located approximately 6 miles south of Breckenridge on the west side of the Highway across from the Skier's Edge Condominiums.
From the trailhead, ride north on a singletrack to a paved road. Turn left and follow the road for a few hundred feet. The doubletrack begins on the left of the road. There is an almost immediate creek crossing, then the trail begins to climb.
Lower McCullough Gulch Road is pretty easy to follow; however, there is a doubletrack spur on the south (left) side of the road near the midpoint (~0.6 miles from the creek crossing) and another less defined doubletrack spur on the left near the top, just after clearing tree line. Basically, just keep going up and you'll stay on track.
