Description
Amity West Trail is can be ridden in either direction and is often combined with the
Amity East Trail or Lester River Trail - Duluth Traverse to make a single or double loop or connect with the Hawk Ridge Trail.
Riding downhill (south):
Start across the road from the Skyline/parking lot, the trail entrance is signed with Hawk Ridge Trail. Climb up the trail and go left just before the first right hand berm, onto the rocky but very short Hawk Ridge - Amity West connector . Don't worry, though: it's pretty much all downhill after this! When you pop out onto Amity West trail proper, take a minute to enjoy the view down the creek valley all the way to Lake Superior.
As the trail continues, the first several minutes will have you flying over small valleys and ridges. There are a number of boardwalks in this section as you pass over many little gullies.
The surroundings are a mix of pine and hardwood forest with occasional views into the creek valley far below you.
The middle section of the trail has more climbs, as you curve up high away from the creek.
When you enter the pine plantation, the smooth flowing trail gradually roller-coasters you down. After the pines, the trail begins to turn back on itself, requiring a few little more grunts to keep the momentum going. Eventually, several tight switch-backs spit you onto Seven Bridges Road.
Cross the bridge and find the entrance to
Amity East Trail on the other side of the road.
