Overview

10 minutes from downtown and you're on your way to a great workout, some excellent scenery, and some fun trails.

This ride features Bob's Trail and Lower Hulls Gulch Trail - two great intermediate downhill rides in the Ridge to River's system.

Pack a lunch for this one - there are a number of good climbs for you to earn your gravity.

Need to Know

Part of this ride covers Trail 4 which is open to motorized vehicles. Perhaps there are moto folks out there that respect MTB riders, but I haven't encountered any of them yet - be aware and be ready to get out of the way.

Another part of this ride is on Lower Hull's Gulch, which is directional based on the day. you can only ride downhill on Hull's on odd-numbered days of the month, so be sure to check the calendar before trying to ride this route as shown. On even-numbered days it's open to uphill riders along with hikers in both directions.

Description

Start from the parking lot between Camelsback park and the Hull's Gulch interpretive center. Get on Owl's Roost #37 and take a left when you get to Kestrel Trail (back toward the road). Stay on this trail until you get to the Lower Hulls Gulch Trail - turn right (uphill) and take this trail for a short distance to the Red Cliffs Trail beginning. You can't miss the actual red cliffs and sand. Now the climbing begins.

Climb Red Cliffs Trail to it's terminus with Crestline Trail - go left (uphill) and stay on this trail all the way to the end. This is the top of Lower Hulls Gulch Trail - you'll be back here later. For now, you still owe some climbing so take a right after crossing Hull's creek and push up Trail 4. This is the most challenging climb of the ride. You'll eventually make it to the top of this short, but steep section of trail.

At the top, you'll cross back over 8th street and find the trailhead for Corrals Trail waiting for you. Take this trail to the left (downhill) and enjoy giving back some of that hard earned vertical.

You'll come to a switchback that has the Bob's Trail sign well marked. Take this trail to the left.

Now you get to really enjoy one of the best downhill technical trails in the system. Assuming survival and desire to continue, you'll take the Highlands Trail back up the hill once you reach the end of Bob's Trail.

Highlands Trail is a recent addition to the system and is a wonder alternative to having to take Bogus Basin road up to Corrals Trail. Highlands is a grind though, but it's pretty and the trail is fun. You'll arrive at the Corrals Trail junction and take a right. Climb up Corrals Trail (passing through 2 gates in the process until you achieve the summit. There is a large totem pile at the summit. This is a great place to have a snack and take in a great view of the valley to the southwest and the mountains behind you.

Continue south on Corrals Trail. You'll pass by the Bob's Trail sign and continue back toward 8th street and the "parking lot" area near Trail 4. Retracing your path from earlier, you'll drop down Trail 4 to the top of Lower Hulls Gulch Trail. This time you take the Lower Hulls Gulch Trail and enjoy the 2nd of two wonderful downhill runs. After completing this run, you'll want to cross over 8th street and take Chickadee Ridge Loop back to the parking lot.

Find beer. Smile. Share your experiences.
