Aspen Mt. Summer Road

This doubletrack road connects downtown Aspen up to the Sundeck restaurant. While you can ride your bike up this steep long climb, it's not a popular ride due to the brutally steep sections that keep coming even as you near the top. Descending the road is a better option, but consider riding down Scotty's Trail instead if you're an expert level rider.

In addition to its difficult nature, the bottom of the road can be hard to find. Continue south on South Original St. at the intersection with Ute Avenue. The paved road narrows and climbs through a dense residential area. Soon enough, the road turns to dirt when you hit the open meadow of the lowest ski run on the mountain. The gate at the pavement/dirt transition will be open most of the summer, but may close during times of construction on the mountain, or if the ski area snow hasn't melted yet.

From the top of the road at the Sundeck, you can continue on Richmond Ridge Road, or Midnight Mine Road, or Little Annie Road.

During the winter ski season, this route is actually the only truly easy way down Aspen Mountain. As such, during the summer bike riding season, this road makes it's way through incredibly steep terrain that includes open ski run meadows, aspen tree glades, and a short sections of dark timber.

The road is open to motor vehicles, and you're likely to encounter some jeeps or motorcycles when the road is open.
