Need to Know
The Shingle Creek trail was improved in 2017 and is a great ride up or down. The Shingle Creek ride is a little shorter by maybe 20 minutes and is very scenic and cooler along the creek. The new switchbacks replaced the previous last two unrideable miles making Shingle Creek an A+ ride.
Description
From the Ridge Road the trail starts out with a very steep descent and goes through a number of switchbacks that come up very fast. This section is a brake burner, so watch those rotors at the bottom of the steep descent. Once you hit the creek the trail flattens out a little bit but remains very challenging.
The trail is very narrow and can be off-camber in sections so you'll need to stay on your toes unless you want to get tossed into the creek. Pick your way through the rocks as you descend and the trail will start to get easier as you leave the pine trees. There is one very tricky rock section in the last of the pine trees that can bounce you off a cliff, so stay on top of things.
As the trail goes into open sagebrush the speed picks up for a while as you cross the creek a couple of times. Then you'll skirt the creek as you weave your way through the tight rocks. The trail opens up in the last section before you hit
Dry Creek.
Watch out for rattlesnakes in early summer as they emerge from their dens.
