Half of this route is closed from November to March since it is Wildlife winter range. Please check the Avimor website ahead of time for the most up to date closures during that time period.
Overview
A tour of some of the best singletrack and views in the Avimor trail system. The high point is Sheep Rock which provides views up to Stack Rock and over to Boise. There can be grazing cows along some of the more remote points so please be aware of the cows.
This ride can provide a lot of solitude once you get away from the community!
Need to Know
This is the racecourse from 2012. The course usually changes every couple of years so if you decide to do the race, do not expect the course to exactly match.
Description
Park in the Avimor community in any of the designated parking lots around the community. Some of these may get reassigned over time, but they do a good job of marking public parking so just watch the signs.
Once at the trailhead you'll generally be traversing across the Avimor foothills beginning on
Spring Valley Creek Trail and then turning onto
Shooting Range.
Shooting Range traverses until it meets
Bovine Nirvana and then you'll use
Bovine Nirvana to get to
Willow Creek.
At the end of
Bovine Nirvana you need to work your way down into the
Willow Creek drainage. At certain times of year the cows can create some false trails so watch your route carefully and just generally aim your bike towards the creek drainage below. Once on
Willow Creek you'll be entering the more rustic portions of the trail system and conditions can vary a fair amount since not as much attention gets paid to the further out trails.
Willow creek climbs for a while and then you'll turn off to the south as you crest the ridge at the top of
Willow Creek. From here you'll climb to the Sheep Rock Summit. At the Sheep Rock Summit you'll descend dirt roads down to
Spring Valley Creek Trail.
Spring Valley Creek Trail is a ripping descent and will take you back to the trailhead.
Then you'll head to
Broken Horn Trail on
Broken Horn Road and then do another loop down
Spring Valley Creek Trail and then loop out to
Willow Creek. This is two big loops with some variations closer to community. Mix it up or cut it short depending on how you are feeling that day.
This ride is meant to give you an overview of the trail system and after this ride you can really mix things up.
