Overview
An entertaining XC loop that links singletrack and rustic two-track along with a portion of the Quebradas Scenic Byway. Used as the race course for the Cerrillos del Coyote XC race.
Need to Know
Best ridden as a clockwise loop. It is signed with BLM trail markers but not terribly well. Taking a navigation device is recommended for first timers.
Trail is most maintained in the late summer and fall - in preparation for the XC race and the winter riding season.
Description
From the trailhead parking, head east on the Quebradas Scenic Byway, followed by a two track to the south. The two-track is rustic but includes a few nice rocky sections, arroyo crossings and singletrack connectors. Watch for BLM signs.
At the Southeast corner, turn onto the winding singletrack that climbs the hogback before connecting to the southern boundary road of the Quebradas OHV area. The most technical feature can be found on this singletrack section - a ledge mid switchback on the last climb.
The south boundary road is a fast gradual descent, which connects to Aunt Flow (not used for the race) and then the La Madre singletrack. Aunt Flow is tight and narrow and not suitable to beginners. La Madre is fast and flowly. The signature feature is the dragon's back descent which has small jumps and some exposure for pucker factor!
From the last arroyo crossing after La Madre, climb the two-track back to the parking area.
