Starting directly out of the Sells Park Parking lot, Athens Trail goes up a steep hill that features railroad tie step-ups. If you would like to get started with a gentler grade, take Rockhouse Trail out of the parking lot (next to the kiosk), then take a right at the top of a short hill (just before the pond) and join up with the Athens Trail as it goes into the woods to the right of the pond.

The Athens Trail features difficult, steep climbing up to the top of the ridge. Once there, it is a nice ridge-top ride with a few moderate climbs and descents, before it makes one steep, rooty, rutted climb to the very top of the ridge, where it intersects with Finger Rock Trail.

Here, the Athens Trail turns right and continues on out the ridge to a steep gravel service road that connects with Hope Drive. The service road is an extremely steep gravel hill that is sometimes quite rutted from rain runoff. Hope Drive connects with E. State Street, directly across from the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway.

Most local cyclists use only the section of Athens Trail between Finger Rock Trail and Sells Park, since the ridgetop that connects with Hope Drive doesn't offer any other singletrack connectivity and leads to such a steep gravel hill (devastatingly steep in the uphill direction).
