Description
The trail begins at the Ramsay Shockey Trailhead. From there you'll traverse the dam of
Pinewood Reservoir. On the far side of the dam, there is a restroom. Here the trail splits, you'll see what appears to be two trails to the left of the restroom (Besant Point Trail), and there is one trail to the right of the restroom (
Shoshone Trail). The two to the left are the Besant Point Trail. They merge with each other after a 100 feet or so. Pick your favorite trail to the left and descend a short hill toward the lake.
At the bottom of the downhill, you are presented with another choice. To the left, the trail will stick close to the water and wrap around Fisherman's Cove. Or to the right the trail will climb up the hill and take a much wider berth around the cove. I recommend going to the right and climbing the hill (this is what has been mapped). The trail to the left was far too narrow on a steep rock face that falls right down into the lake for my taste (especially for someone getting used to clipless pedals).
After you've gone around the cove and continued on just a little ways further, you'll come to a sign marking the trail junction with the
Shoshone Trail to the right. Continue past that and the trail continues to follow the contour of the lake. From here on out it's a pretty well-flowing trail, with only a couple of small climbs / rocky sections. There are some marshy sections towards the far end of the trail, but the county has done a nice job of building bridges over the marshiest sections.
There is another restroom and parking area at the end of the trail. This is known as the Blue Mountain Trailhead. You can either ride your bike on the road back to where you started, or turn around and go back the way you came, this time picking up the Shoshone trail (that's what I did!!).
