Description
Park on 13th St. in Yucaipa, CA. Hop on your bike, cross the street to the north and start rolling on the dirt sidewalk track. Three Hawks is the second trail on your right - a 1-mile climb with a consistent, moderate grade. The lower half is fairly open with berms on many of the switchbacks.
The top section kicks up a bit, and the switchbacks get tighter. There's a little bit of minor exposure in spots, but nothing too threatening. The top of the trail dumps you off on a fire road for a more cross-country ride. Following the fire road to the regional park trail, taking that down, and taking the road back to your car gets you around 10 miles of riding. The trail surface is standard SoCal hardpack to loose over hardpack, with a rocky base that holds up pretty well to the infrequent rain. The trail is decently flowy and lets you keep up speed on the downhill.
Watch out for climbing cyclists and hikers, there are lots of both, but hikers are used to, and very tolerant of, mountain bikers. Sightlines tend to be very good, so climb/descend conflicts are rare.
