Overview

A fairly easy loop around Three Fingers on fairly well maintained dirt 4x4 roads. No potable water for miles, though you may filter your own while on the east side of the loop.

Need to Know

Bring lots of water.

Description

Start out with a 1.5-mile climb on McIntyre Spring Road heading north on smooth, wide dirt track. Continue on McIntyre Spring Road for almost three miles on a downhill coast to Sheephead Road.

Here, turn west at Sage Creek and start the almost three-mile climb up Sheephead Road. The first mile is steeper than the second but offers an option for a side trip to a spring just off to the right. (I never trust water from any source out here and recommend you filter it to be safe).

About half a mile before you get to Long Gulch Road, you'll come to a gate, leave it open or closed as you found it. You'll come to the intersection of Sheephead Road and Long Gulch Road with a gate and cattle guard to the south. Cross the cattle guard on Long Gulch Road and ride 2.25 miles south on a gently rolling traverse along the west side of Three Fingers and out onto a breathtaking ridge.

From here, coast for 1.5 miles as Long Gulch Road gets rougher and drops quickly down into a wide valley before dropping into a tighter deeper canyon for an encore. Long Gulch Road then traverses out of the canyon and over to a really cool spire about 0.75 miles before giving you another mile of coasting down a ridge into Three Fingers Gulch.

Climb just 0.25 miles up Long Gulch Road, still heading south, to Three Fingers Gulch Road on your left. Enjoy a gradual two-mile climb up Three Fingers Gulch on Three Fingers Gulch Road. As the canyon curves to the south, you are presented with a killer 0.25-mile climb up the side of a ridge before leveling out on top. The climb continues south another 1.75 miles up two ridges before you get a break.

Three Fingers Gulch Road then cuts sharply to the east and, for the most part, maintains elevation the two miles to Rodger Spring with a little dip as you go through Pinnacle Reservoir. Both Pinnacle Reservoir and Rodger Spring are dry as a bone. Take Three Fingers Gulch Road one more mile southeast to Rodger Spring Cutoff. Take the mild climb up Rodger Spring Cutoff just over two miles north to where you started on McIntyre Spring Road.
