Description

This trail holds alot of names - R and R, Loop 3, Chaos downhill, etc.... and probably many more that I don't even know about. Bottom line - this is a fun trail. Beware, this is also a popular moto trail.

After climbing Lower Faceplant, continue straight onto the Chaos. You'll continue your climb for about 10 more minutes or so with a couple short downhill sections. One area of note before topping out is a small ravine you'll descend into with a natural dirt wall ride created by the erosion in the creekbed. Hit it fast and you'll have no problems.

Top out at a fenceline and get ready for a fast moto-whooped descent! After the quick descent, you'll come to a gravel road. Look across and you'll see a sign for Loop 3. Take Loop 3 to continue on. After some more moto-woops, you'll come to the edge of the mesa looking East. Continue and look for little arrow signs on the junipers to direct you through. The trail briefly rides on a 4x4 road then drops back on the mesa to the right after an obvious camping area with a firepit.

The rest of the ride is a ledge-fest, lots of fun Horsethief-like ledges to fly off of. The trail also works the hillside so you'll never go to far down before coming back up the hill just a bit. There are some very fast, fun sections in here and also some very frustrating, flow-sucking sections as well. Oh well, grin and bear it, you are riding the Chaos baby! Use the MTB Project mobile app to keep you from getting confused!

The trail eventually curves left and approaches a very steep and rutted section of rocky trail. Be careful here! After the steep hill, the trail flows above a creek bed but heavy rains in 2014 have created a significant rain gutter in the center of the trail. This could really mess up an unsuspecting rider so you have been warned! The trail then pops out to a 4x4 road. Go right here. After 100 yards, look right for an orange arrow directing you back onto the trail into a dry creek bed. Ride the creek bed until it pops out at another 4x4 road. Go right to head back to the BLM lot or left head towards more continuation of Loop 3 and the Gun Loop. Smile, you survived the Chaos!

Motarded out pump track with ruts and loose climbs, does count as singletrack (in this primarily OHV area) but is no less than a meter wide. C+
