This section of the TRT is bike legal from 64 Acres parking area in Tahoe City to the Pacific Crest Trail/Granite Chief Wilderness intersection. It is a gorgeous section of the TRT with aspens, amazing views, wildflowers and lots of technical challenges.
The popular
Page Meadows section is intermediate difficulty and features flowing singletrack (with a few uphill challenges), and gorgeous meadows full of aspens. It is particularly awesome in the spring (wildflowers), and the fall (blazing golden aspens). It is a great climb with a few tough sections to climb before flattening out near the meadows. It is also a popular hiking trail due to it's proximity to Tahoe City - so descend with care and don't scare hikers. Most people ride the TRT and
Page Meadows north of Ward Creek as a ride in and of itself.
There are numerous unmarked intersections in the area and most streets in the neighborhood have a social trail connector into the
Page Meadows "trail system." While confusing, it's difficult to get truly lost out here. You'll eventually wind up in the neighborhoods or rejoin the TRT.
The section on the south side of Ward Creek Blvd. also has epic scenery, but also many tough technical challenges and is most often ridden downhill from the
Stanford Rock Trail. It is old school singletrack with lots of rocks and awkwardly spaced rock steps. It can of course be ridden in either direction, just plan for lots of dismounts and extra time on the way up.
The views of the Pacific Crest from the climb, aspens, wildflowers and big panoramas are amazing here. The trail crosses under Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks is an off-trail scramble through a volcanic boulder field, which is worthwhile if you have time.
The first mile or so on the south side of Ward Creek is an old logging road until the trail crosses Ward Creek on a large bridge (then the true singletrack begins). The logging road is slated for a road-to-trail conversion in the next few years, so this will be 100% singletrack at some point.
If you plan on riding this section of the TRT as an out-and-back, just be aware that it is a big day and harder than the 22-mile round trip implies.
Please check the
Stanford Rock Loop description for more information.
Unfortunately, this trail is not bike legal beyond the PCT/Wilderness intersection.
