Description
Big Silverlead Trail can be ridden both directions and it provides many options: loop this trail with
Little Silverlead,
Burns Ridge or
Stein Mountain trail; or shuttle it from Stein Lookout and
Stein Mountain to your choice of lower Wagonhammer trails.
Mapped here, the Big Silverlead Trail descends from the
Stein Mountain trail first along the flat ridge there then dropping to the right. The trail can be faint on the upper end but it stays close to the bottom of the gully after leaving the ridge. It quickly comes to and crosses
Sheep Creek Road #077 and continues along the bottom of the gully to
Road 063, the second of the roads.
DO NOT cross this road. Go right and around the bend to the next gully. The trail drops from the road again and winds through some large Fir trees. It then steepens where the canyon narrows, gets rocky and runs next to the creek. There is frequently water running on the trail here and this is the most difficult section of the trail.
Once below this rocky section, the trail follows the bottom of the drainage. Look for old steel sawmill parts marking the junction of the
Silverleads Connector trail. Lower down, cairns or
Lewis and Clark markers show the junctions for
Little Silverlead and
Burns Gulch Trails.
Big Silverlead trail continues descending but comes to private land. The public access at the bottom is not well marked. Do not continue below the trail shown here and the last broad meadow.
