Overview
A good road warm-up followed by a technical climb, leading to a technical ridge, and finishing up on a fast and technical downhill. Did I mention that this one is technical??
Need to Know
This is a quick drying trail.
Description
First, you'll warm-up on a good road ride from the
North Fork Mountain Trail parking lot to the
Landis Trail parking lot. This is the most relaxed portion of the ride, so be sure to take in your surroundings on this portion.
You'll stay on the road until coming to the Landis trailhead. Climbing the
Landis Trail will start steep and stay steep for 1.4 miles to the ridge. The closer to the top the more technical the trail will become.
Take a moment to catch your breath at the top before you turn right onto
North Fork Mountain Trail. Luckily you've done most of your climbing by this point. The
North Fork Mountain Trail will gradually descend for almost a mile before it rolls over and will start to get steeper, remaining technical all the time.
The further you go down the less technical the trail will become, as the bigger rocks become smaller until you are on shale. You'll be on the
North Fork Mountain Trail all the way until you finish the loop, and end back at your vehicle.
History & Background
The exposed rocks you see are Tuscarora quartzite (or sandstone). The spots for views of these formations and across the valley are abundant.
