Description
This trail begins off of Highway 24, opposite the parking lot for Waldo Canyon. It can also be accessed from the
Ute Pass Trail. This is a very steep climb, especially mile 3.
The first two miles climb gradually up the eastern face of Mount Manitou. The doubletrack allows for many lines which helps with avoiding wash, gravel, and sand on the climb. The views towards Rampart Range and Waldo Canyon are spectacular.
The third mile has an average grade of 20% and a max grade of 35%. This steep grade in combination with road berms every several hundred feet make for a difficult climb. Wide tires with aggressive grip are recommended.
Just after mile 3, the trail levels out and descends towards the Barr Trail and Ruxton Creek. Spectacular views of Pikes Peak, Almagre and Cameron Cone can be seen as the trail descends through beautiful aspen and pine groves.
At mile 4, the trail intersects with the Barr Trail for a few hundred feet. Continue onto Longs Ranch Road on the south side of the trail.
The trail continues towards Ruxton Creek, where the tracks for the Pikes Peak Cog Rail can be seen lower in the canyon. This portion of doubletrack is overgrown and not maintained.
The trail ends at a pipeline bridge. Crossing over the bridge is not permitted.
