Trail is closed for Improvements from
Berkeley's Holler to the south down to where
Rocky Ridge crosses it. You can however ride the lower half from
Rocky Ridge down to the bottom.
The trail drains really fast however there are natural springs throughout so it's not uncommon to splash through a few wet spots. Go easy, limit the impact your tires have in these sections and it'll be fine.
One Way Only: This is designated as a directional trail.
Description
Schroen Train is one of the more technical sections of Slaughter Pen. It's located on the east side of Phase 2 across the road (SE A St. aka Slaughter Pen Rd.) from the wooden bridge that crosses the creek.
Cross the road and head through the metal barrier and you'll see the final drop of the trail to your right. Cruise past this point and make your way further east until the trail curves right and begins the switchbacks up. East side Phase 2 is essentially two main sections; north (Scott Allen Parkway) and the south (Schroen Train,
Berkeley's Holler,
Rocky Ridge South). The best way to ride the south side is clockwise.
Schroen Train has two good sized wooden bridge drops plus alternative lines. Quick, tight turns, chunky rocks and a few rooted sections plus some slippery, off-camber descents/climbs make this trail a test of technical ability. Unlike most trails in Slaughter Pen, the Schroen Train trail is one that could get a novice rider into trouble if not careful. There is a wooden ladder drop about half way down and it's a good size drop with a slight turn to the left.
As you roll off the end and your wheels go airborne, you'll drift slightly to the right (which is an awesome feeling) before you land with speed and quickly maneuver through an s-curve. Don't feel like going big? No problem. Take the ladder bridge (middle line) or the far right singletrack.
Bottom line: If you're looking for some technical challenges, Schroen Train is awesome!
