Description

Cakewalk is one of just a few trails in the Diamond Head Area that can be shuttled. It's actually quite a bit easier than the alternatives, but it still dishes up plenty of challenge for some rowdy fun.

From the Garibaldi Park Road, Cakewalk begins fairly gradually with smooth, playful singletrack. A ways after the first turn, the technical aspects of the trail gradually start coming into play with some roots and the first steep section.

Turn two is a tight hairpin that ushers in a straightaway into thick and tricky roots that do their best to kill speed. Cakewalk then heads into a series of steep and chunky descents that require fast line choices to avoid the worst rocks and roots. This is followed directly by the first of several wooden bridges.

The trail continues alternating between sections riddled with roots and and off-camber rock rolls. Ahead, a series of steep and tight chicanes begins with a wooden berm. There's an optional wooden drop in the middle of this section that can be fun, but it does have a harsh bottom out.

As the trail approaches the edge of the clear cut, it becomes more rocky/gravelly as it winds back and forth. Although the bridges in this section are narrow, most are pretty easy to manage. Keep an eye-out for a small drop into a runoff. The drop is very manageable, but the runoff quickly feeds into a sharp, off-camber turn with lots of exposure.

The rest of the trail passes pretty quickly with more bridges, clear cut winding, and an optional gap before it exits onto the Cakewalk Access Road.

Spring gives this already interesting trail some added flair by crossing over this rushing waterfall.

This optional gap on Cakewalk requires a good clip of speed to clear.
