Overview
The Big Topanga Loop is a scenic and challenging ride that overlooks Santa Monica and the Pacific Ocean. Tackle the route in a clockwise direction from the Will Rogers State Park trailhead.
Need to Know
Don't forget to pay for parking at Will Rogers State Park. The initial part of the ride is on Sunset Blvd - follow all road rules.
Description
Start this ride with a warm-up on Sunset Blvd before the big climb on
East Topanga Fire Road. Although it’s a grind, you’ll be treated to 360° views of the Pacific Ocean and the mountains surrounding LA. Continue straight at the
Parker Mesa Overlook and pedal to
Eagle Springs Fire Road. Continue on the main doubletrack here to a three-way trail junction.
Take Backbone Trail: Will Rogers Trailhead to Musch Camp (the two-track headed up) toward Eagle Springs Rock, an interesting place to stop and check out the views.
At the top, you’ll stay to the right and head around to the Backbone singletrack, a descent that has plenty of fun and flow, a very playful downhill experience. As you make your way back to the trailhead, you'll encounter a mix of fast, open ridgeline sections, short sections in the trees, and unlimited views.
Take care near the
J-Drop (Josepho Spur Trail) intersection. The trail skirts an exposed sidehill and crosses a couple of bridges before the lower portion of the descent.
