Switchback city! There is really no good way to climb up toward Castle Rock, but this is perhaps the best way.

Description

This trail is a series of tight switchbacks that wind all the way up to marker 41 (near Castle Rock). At first, the trail seems very rideable, and it feels like the ride will be quite pleasant (minus the super tight switchbacks). Eventually, the trail starts to feature rock gardens and even built-in rock staircases.

This trail was clearly built with hikers in mind and ends up not being very bike friendly. There are two or three makeshift staircases toward the top that are all but unrideable. Beyond those hazards, most of the trail is manageable.

Once you get to the top, there really is no easy way down, however, as the eastern flank of the South Dale Ball trail network is very tough. From marker 41, you can keep climbing toward Picacho Peak or you can take one of the trails back down to marker 40.
