This trail is for winter use only when snow covered.
Overview
This follows the
Iditarod Trail to Flathorn Lake and then returns on two trails to Ashyire Rd. This can be done as a shuttle, and it's recommended that you do.
Need to Know
This is a winter route. The Iditarod bike racers will not ride the
Iditarod Trail to Flathorn Lake. They will get on the road and end up on Ayshire Road and ride the route in reverse from that point to Flathorn Lake.
Start at the "end" of this ride and do it backwards if you want to get out to Flathorn Lake just to see the racers. There are lots of trails out there and private property, so stay aware and reference the map as needed.
Description
Begin by leaving your retrieval vehicle (shuttle) on Ayshire Road. From Wasilla - travel southwest on Knik Goose Bay Road. At Mile 17, turn west (right) on Point MacKenzie Road; follow Point MacKenzie Road for 7 ½ miles to the intersection with Ayshire Road, take a right and travel west on Ayshire for 3 miles. The trailhead is on the north side of Ayshire Road.
Next, drive to Knik Lake and start the ride along the
Iditarod Trail to Flathorn Lake. The ride is about 40 miles over fairly easy rolling hills. But, the conditions can make it challenging if the snow is soft. Some of the sections follow very straight lines for miles. Ride to the lake, then ride back to where you left the cars. Hit Knik Lake on the way back for some good grub.
