Description
Starting at
Lydle Gulch, this trail affords a close-up view of Lucky Peak Reservoir's spillway discharge flumes at the parking area. Though the trail makes use of an old road it is very much a singletrack as it winds along the water's edge under towering cliffs above.
This trail starts out as a wide, flat trail pretending to be an easy/intermediate trail. Enjoy it while it lasts. About 1.3 miles in on the way to the diversion dam, the trail splits. The lower, flat trail takes you to a dead end in an old quarry. The left trail cuts sharply up the canyon wall with a brutal climb that will send even the seasoned rider into the upper limits of safe heart rates.
Now that your heart is flexing your rib cage to its limits, the trail levels out a bit and gets very technical! Though there has been some hand stacked rock sections built at the heavy fields, the trail mostly dodges and weaves through the last 50 years of odd rocks. This is no Sunday ride in the park with your in-laws. As bad as that sounds this is worse! Or better, depending on your sanity levels.
After every nerve is shot and every muscle has burned into knots, you'll eventually gain the high flat ground and the
Oregon Trail - Rim Route trail.
Enjoy and be safe. Oh, and it is not funny or nice to bring your friends out here before they are ready.
