Description
The trail starts on old logging road, but don't be fooled into thinking this is an easy trail. You'll quickly encounter tall rock walls and cliffsides which require attention to navigate. The trail switches back and forth between intermediate and difficult skill levels.
There is a doubletrack section in the middle that is flat and approximately three miles long. It is a welcomed sight after the tricky, slow-going singletrack. The doubletrack passes several old mine shafts where cool air can be felt flowing from them on a warm day.
The trailhead at US 27 is not the end. The trail gets smooth and flowy until it T's with gravel
Forest Road 682 (Flat Rock Ridge Rd - Christian Cemetery Rd) approximately 3/4 mile further north. This is the end of the singletrack for Section 30.
For more singletrack, turn left on the gravel road and follow the Sheltowee blazes and NRT signs to
Sheltowee Trace NRT: Section 31 (cross US 27, railroad tracks, and down Wiborg Loop (road) for a short distance). The total road between singletrack is approx. 3/4 mi.
Parking: There is limited parking at the beginning of Section 30. There is a grassy area, part of a dirt road, and a gravel pull-off that will fit one car each. Near the end of Section 30, there is a trailhead with a gravel parking lot on US 27, but this not the end of the trail. Parking is available at the end of Section 30 adjacent to the Flat Rock Missionary Baptist Church with a shelter and picnic tables.
