There's a seasonal Bald Eagle Nesting Closure on the northwest end of this trail. The full closure is in effect from December 1 to July 1 and there's a narrower closure at all times/year round; it is illegal to approach/be within 200 yards of an eagle nest, per the Bald Eagle Protection Act. The nest is not on the trail so outside of the seasonal closure as long as you do not go beyond the posted signs you are okay.

Description

The Cave Run Trail is a nice long trail incorporating some ridgetop and a significant valley crossing. It connects to Buckskin Trail (113), Crossover Trail (107), and the Hog Pen Trail (106) and can be used to put together loops of varying lengths and difficulties. Cave Run also crosses the Zilpo Scenic Byway which can further be used to create other looped rides with the full Buckskin Trail (113).

The climbs on Cave Run are hard. They'll burn your quads, test your turning skills, and push your comfort levels as you negotiate off-camber rocky sections on steep sideslopes. As you near the Scenic Byway, there is a significant steep and rocky section that most riders will walk. Beware if descending northbound and there is no shame in walking. This is old school Cave Run after all...

The US Forest Service is working to develop reroutes to allow the trails in this area to stay open year round.
