Family Friendly If you skip the Snowcat section and stay on Englewood Road back to the Mickelson Trail, most of the long uphill sections are avoided.

A Mickelson Trail pass is required to ride on the Mickelson for non-registered racers. Mile High registration includes a day pass to the Mickelson Trail for race day.

Overview

Great views of Lead, Deadwood, Homestake Mine, and Whitewood Creek can all be had from this fun and challenging course.

Need to Know

The cut-across from the top of Sugarloaf to Wasp is not maintained and can be rough at spots. The gate is shut most of the year but will be open on race day.

Description

The trail starts in Lead on the new Homestake Trail, then heads down into Deadwood on the Mickelson Trail. Follow the Mickelson Trail up Kirk Canyon to the top of Sugarloaf. Take a left at the top of Sugarloaf, through the green gate. Follow the trail down to the Wasp Picnic Shelter back on the Mickelson on Whitewood Creek. Take a right, up the Mickelson. Stay low through the gate to Englewood Road. Follow Englewood Road, take a left up Snowcat. Snowcat Road is a long uphill with seven switchbacks and turns into Snowy Bluffs Road.

Take a left after the last switchback to the powerline corridor. Follow the trail under the powerline corridor to Railroad Grade Road. Railroad Grade is mostly downhill, ride back down to Englewood Road and take a left on Englewood Road. Follow Englewood Road and take a right at the Mickelson crossing back up Sugarloaf, past the top and back down to the Sugarloaf Trailhead.

Pass through the Sugarloaf Trailhead and cross the highway to Walt Green Park (Lead Trailhead of the Mickelson Trail). This ends the Mile High Course. Then coast down through Lead back to your vehicle.
