Description

From the main Queenstown-Glenorchy Road, Moke Creek Road heads north into the backcountry behind Ben Lemond Peak.

The road starts with an aerobically demanding 1,000-foot climb over one and three-quarters miles on a paved segment of Moke Creek Road. Shortly after you reach the top of the climb, the road surface changes to gravel and you'll cross over into pasture land. You may encounter sheep and/or cattle.

This begins an easy, pleasant descent down to Moke Lake where you can take the Moke Lake Loop Track or head into the backcountry behind Ben Lemond Peak by taking the Ben Lemond Station Road.

There is also a trailhead at Moke Lake, so you could drive there and skip this segment altogether.
