Overview

After riding to the cabin at Kentucky Camp, this loop heads north and then veers west and south through oak woodlands with great vistas of Mt. Wrightson and the Mule Mountains.

Need to Know

There is no water along the route. Take plenty of your own water, spare tube, bike tools, sunscreen, and food. This is a very remote area, and you probably won't see anyone else along the way.

Description

For those who want more than an out-and-back ride to the Forest Service cabin at Kentucky Camp, this ride helps make a nice 11-mile loop. From the cabin, head north on the road to where it joins a Forest Service road. Head west on this road for about two miles.

Then take the well-used two track that heads west when the main road you have been on heads north uphill. This unmarked Forest Service road is not well-used but is very rideable. It winds through the oak woodlands on the eastern slopes of Mount Wrightson. There is quite a bit of up and down as the road winds back to the main parking lot on Gardner Canyon Road.

History & Background

This area was an important mining area and Kentucky Camp and Greaterville both were boom towns. Fortunately, the Kentucky Camp cabins have been preserved and there is a caretaker there. After you leave Kentucky Camp, there are no structures you'll encounter. Open mine adits are common in the area.
