Description

The Rim Trail is very popular, but the escarpment below is excellent for the intermediate rider who doesn't mind some cardio and hike-a-biking. The Alamo Peak Trail provides one such option for climbing, but it's probably best enjoyed coming down. There are also some tufa spring deposits along the trail to add some visual interest.

The lower section from the trailhead is singletrack running along the hillside to quickly pass Atkinson Field Trail #111. The middle section is an access road to shallow wells that supply Alamogordo. You'll pass Pipeline Trail #110 through here.

The upper section is very coarse gravel with some loose rocks in spots. There are six switchbacks but they are wide and not difficult. The trail is convex along the mountainside with some strong cross-slopes but it is well-dished and it would take effort to go over the edge. There are no big rocks. Rated difficult for the steep grade.

There is abundant parking at camping space near the bottom trailhead on FR93. The top of the trail can connect to the Rim Trail (T105) via the Alamo Lookout Road (FR64D).
