Rattler Rim Trail provides an alternative route to the road along Teetotal Flats. Although it is rated grade 2, the track has a few demanding short uphills, some rocky surfaces, and narrow spots between the manuka vegetation that lines much of the track.
From its eastern end on Skating Pond Loop, the track wiggles through clearings in the manuka and fords a small creek just before crossing Teetotal Road. Across the road, it sidles the hill through mature kanuka trees before descending and recrossing the road. It them follows along the top of the escarpment which offers occasional glimpses of the Buller River flats as it twists tightly through tall manuka.
The track opens out into more clearings as you head west. A sign marks a link to Sidewinder Trail. More clearings and open grassy flats dominate the western end of the track before it ends on Teetotal Road.
