Not Allowed
The route is typically snow-covered from late November through sometime in April, and the
Rocket Trail can be somewhat muddy for a few days following rain or snowmelt.
Overview
This short loop combines a moderate climb up
Lightning Creek Road (FS 611) and a fast descent down the
Rocket Trail, a non-motorized trail that has been widened to ATV width. It's short enough that some folks may want to make multiple laps!
Need to Know
Lightning Creek Road is open to all vehicles, and you may also encounter ATVs illegally using the
Rocket Trail, so be aware.
Description
Start by riding up
Lightning Creek Road (FS 611) from the parking area. The grade is pretty steady and moderate, just watch out for other vehicles and the rubber/wood water bars across the road. There is one switchback in this section of the road about halfway up. After that point, watch for an un-signed path dropping off the left side of the road (downhill). This is the
Rocket Trail.
Follow this path through the trees. You'll soon drop down the trail's only steep section, then pass the "Rocket" on your left and wind your way back down to the gate at the bottom. There are a number of whoops and moderately sharp corners to keep things interesting.
To get there, drive about 7.0 miles north of Crouch on Middlefork Road and turn right on
Lightning Creek Road (FS 611). One could start the ride at the bottom to add several miles and about 400 feet of climbing, but there aren't any good parking areas there. So, it's suggested to drive until you see the first green gate (bottom of the
Rocket Trail) on the left and park there. Other parking spots are available further up the road as well.
