Avoid this area when there is a chance of rain or after recent rains.

This would be an excellent shuttle from the Sinkhole intersection of the San Rafael swell. A short climb leads to a fast descent down Black Dragon Canyon via a somewhat rugged 4x4 doubletrack. Some two-way traffic can be expected from side-by-sides or Jeeps, but stock passenger vehicles are unlikely to be encountered.

At roughly the halfway mark, you'll be able to see an I-70 rest area just a few hundred feet to the south with Black Dragon Wash in between. Continuing down the road, you'll drop into the canyon and encounter short sections of technical 4x4 terrain. From there, the trail will become quite loose and sandy. Look for a very large wall on your left (north) with pictographs and a wooden fence below it.

Continue through more loose sandy terrain but the quality of the road will quickly improve as you exit the canyon. Continuing down the dirt road will lead to a cattle fence that exits directly onto I-70. If you shuttled, this area would be the pick-up and you can drive through a tunnel that runs below I-70 to get into the eastbound lanes. High clearance might be necessary here.
