Please note the signage is average and there are some spots that can be confusing without clear markings. Also a red squiggle sign is the equivalent of a "black trail" or advanced marker.
This trail system is generally open year round although it should be avoided when muddy. Certain low sections take time to dry in the spring and the trail is usually not dried out till mid March. Signage is not the best but the trail system is condensed into a small park forest so it's easy to get re-routed.
You'll pop in off the parking lot on
South Loop and find a straight climb with roots. At the top, take a left for the first red sign and you get a series of fast down and ups with roots to jump off and climb up and a few berms as well. These climbs are brutal for the first mile of the ride so be ready and warmed up.
As you climb out, take a left and head down a fast downhill with some jumps and a huge table top at the bottom. If you like to air it out, this is the jump to do it on as you have about 20 feet of table to the backside and about a five foot lip on the jump. This leads into some flats, a roller, and a slow rooty climb.
Take a right at the top of the rooty climb instead of straight to catch the start of the
Wolf Trail. Here, lots of roots, tough corners, and a few downhills mean there's plenty to keep you on your toes. You'll come out of the
Wolf Trail on a turning downhill and have a fork in the trail. You'll see a sign for a Bywater Trail and it will more than likely be taped off. That is almost always flooded and nobody rides it so just stay left and rail the berm option to head into the flats. The flats are fast, flat, and flowy with lots of winding turns and rollers.
You come out of the flats as you cross a bridge over a wet area. This bridge is two-way traffic but it is wide so stay right and you'll be fine. You'll pop out of the woods and be at the edge of Route 30 and a baseball field. Follow the trail through some pines and grass as it rides just south of 30. At the underpass, follow the trail through the grass and go under the 30 bridge on the gravel. After clearing the bridge, stay right and you'll see a sign to enter the woods for the
North Loop. Make sure you take the trail going in to the right as the left is where you come out later in the ride.
Here, some technical climbs lead to a rooty downhill and another short grass section that leads you back into the woods. Follow a flat rolling section that will veer you right over a small rock garden and into a tough climb and fast down to up. When you hit the fork next, go right and FYI there is no sign here. Right takes you to the red trail hills and left will skip this part. The Red Hills are super tight, steep switchbacks that carve along the hills. This is the most challenging section at Morsches so be ready to get your work in on the climbs. You'll pop out and go right back on the main trail and climb up and twist down some rooty sections. You'll approach a fork eventually and you can take the right. It only adds maybe 100 yards on the ride and its not a black but it is a little extra trail. If you do miss it you wont miss much.
After this, you continue with a mix of flow and technical and lead into a big sweeping corner on the hills edge with a nice view up maybe 50-60 feet. Continue with a tight sweeping turn. Next will be a fast rooty downhill with a nice berm to take you into a flat section of flow. You'll pop out and turn left and you'll see a spot to pop right back in the woods. Follow through some tight corners and a hard left downhill turn by a bridge that pops you out of the woods momentarily before a rooty downhill jump.
After a small climb, you turn left and stay straight as there are a few crossings that just lead out to a paved trail. Climb up and take a hard 180-degree left following the signs. Stay left and drop down a dip with a jump at the bottom. Take a sweeping right into the north flats which are fun with flow and berms. You'll take a hard left at the end and climb up a steep down and up and when you come out stay left.
Here, the fast and flowy trail takes you back across the grass into the woods and quickly back out, under the Route 30 bridge, back by the ball falls, over the bridge you crossed, and take right. Finally, some flat flow and a tough final climb reward you with a drop-off jump heading downhill before your last climb to the parking lot!
