Description

This fire road really has two segments. It provides the best entrance to Briones Regional Park from Lafayette BART station. It is less than 2 miles/about 3 km. The Las Trampas-to-Briones Trail is a closer entrance to this BART station at more than 1 mile/about 2 km, but its characteristics make it not as appealing to most.

The eastern segment of the Mariposa Trail is a near fall line route. It is better to ride out of Briones than in, unless you are either in a huge rush or seriously thick in the thigh and experienced in the brain.

The western segment contours gently across the hillside. It affords some spectacular views of the Lafayette area, and also is wonderfully perfumed by chaparral in spring through summer. It is easy/intermediate, but because it is combined with the eastern segment under one name it falls under the overall intermediate rating. Combined with the Russell Peak Trail, it is the better way in, and probably more enjoyable for most on the way out.
