Need to Know
Because this area is extremely remote, it's highly suggested to have an emergency bike and medical kit. The area is teeming with wildlife, so bear spray wouldn't hurt to bring along. Some of the best bikepacking in Northern New Mexico.
Description
The ride begins at the cemetery in the quaint village of Amalia. Ride through the village for several miles until you reach the Valle Vidal boundary. The ride can also be started inside the Valle Vidal if you want to avoid pavement. Stay on this main road for 14 miles until you reach Comanche Point.
At Comanche Point, turn right and continue on this road for four miles until the road forks again. At the fork, stay right on
FS Road #1905 and continue going until you see the abandoned lodge to the left. Go past the lodge facing east and navigate the overgrown road to the heart of the valley.
Once at the basin of the valley, navigate to the overgrown road that heads in a northeastern direction. Climb to the top of the pass then descend going west on
FS Valle Vidal Road #1950. This descent is blazing fast so just be ready for speed. Once at the road that you started on, just retrace your steps to your parking area to finish this scenic ride.
