Description
There is an on-street trailhead just east of the fire station on Jacks Valley Road. Many people start the ride here, but the trail crosses the road and continues another half a mile to the large dirt parking lot on the west side of Jacks Valley Elementary School on a very curvy and fun section (when it's not extremely sandy and dry). The trail now climbs gently from the valley all the way to Spooner Summit. There are a few undulations, but mostly it's uphill. The last mile or so to Spooner is gently downhill.
Many people ride from Jacks Valley School to the knob and back for a 15-mile round trip. The trail used to continue from the Knob to Old Clear Creek Road, but now there is an intersection at the creek where the trail continues upward to Spooner, and the two-mile section across the old road is called
Clear Creek Connector.
Along the way, there are two incredible viewpoints, one of which is atop a big rock called Cliff Rock. If you have the time it is worth going all the way to the trail's end for about a 30-mile out-and-back, or join the TRT and keep riding!
A few miles farther south on Jacks Valley Road, you'll find the historic town of Genoa where there are additional trails and services. Be sure to stop in at the Genoa Bar (Nevada's Oldest Thirst Parlor) or stop at David Walley's for a soak at their hot spring fed pool. There are also several places to eat in town. The loop from the school to the TRT, then to
Sierra Canyon Trail, to Genoa and back on the road is spectacular.
